A modern approach to professional dental cleaning

Guided Biofilm Therapy takes a focused approach to the build-up on your teeth. A professional dental clean is about more than making teeth feel smooth. It removes deposits that brushing and flossing cannot always reach, while helping you understand where your home-care routine may need a little more attention. Family Dental Care has introduced EMS technology to support a more precise, comfortable approach to oral hygiene care.

The system is associated with Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT). It combines a structured clinical process with EMS AIRFLOW technology to help a trained dental professional identify and remove dental biofilm, soft deposits and certain surface stains.

What is dental biofilm?

Biofilm is the soft, sticky layer of bacteria that forms on teeth, around the gumline and in areas that can be difficult to clean. You may know it simply as plaque. If you do not remove it regularly, it can contribute to tooth decay and gum inflammation. Some of it can also harden into calculus, called tartar.

Because biofilm is not always easy to see, a dental professional may use a disclosing product to make it visible. This highlights the areas that need attention during the appointment. It can also show you where brushing or interdental cleaning could be improved at home.

How EMS AIRFLOW dental cleaning works

EMS AIRFLOW uses a controlled combination of air, water and fine powder to remove biofilm and surface staining from accessible tooth surfaces. The spray can reach around contours and into spaces that are awkward to polish with a conventional rubber cup. Depending on the condition of your mouth, the clinician may then use an ultrasonic or hand instrument to remove any remaining hard calculus.

The aim is not to use one technique for every patient. A proper appointment begins with an assessment. The clinician then adapts the cleaning method to your gum health, any sensitivity, dental restorations, orthodontic appliances, implants and other clinical factors. The EMS guide to Guided Biofilm Therapy explains the steps behind this approach.

What patients may notice

Many people find the air, water and fine-powder spray gentler than having every tooth surface polished or instrumented in the same way. It can be especially helpful when cleaning around fixed braces, retainers or complex tooth shapes, where plaque tends to collect in small spaces. However, the experience is different from person to person. Tell the clinician if you have sensitive teeth or feel uncomfortable at any stage.

Your mouth should feel clean and fresh afterwards. Removing surface stains from tea, coffee, tobacco or other sources can also improve the appearance of the teeth. However, AIRFLOW is not a whitening treatment and does not change the natural colour of the tooth. If whitening is your goal, ask your dentist which option is suitable for you. You can also explore our dental treatments and preventive care before your visit.

Is Guided Biofilm Therapy right for everyone?

GBT can form part of preventive and maintenance care for many patients, but it is not automatically the correct approach in every situation. Active gum disease, heavy calculus, areas below the gumline, medical considerations and existing dental work can all affect how a clinician should perform a cleaning.

This is why the assessment matters. Your dentist or oral hygienist will decide which parts of the EMS system are appropriate and whether you need other treatment. A professional clean also does not replace daily brushing, cleaning between the teeth or regular dental examinations.

Good home care remains the foundation

One of the useful parts of a biofilm-focused appointment is seeing the areas your toothbrush may be missing. Small changes to your brushing angle, interdental brush size or flossing technique can make the clean feeling last longer. They can also reduce the amount of plaque that builds up between visits.

Your recommended recall interval will depend on your gum health, decay risk, orthodontic or implant care and how quickly deposits tend to return. There is no single schedule that suits every mouth.
